“Children learn to count when they’re doing hopscotch,” Hirsch–Pasek said. “They learn about numbers when they’re playing stickball, and believe me they know which team is ahead. They are telling stories on the playground, and they’re getting active.”
Babies and toddlers learn by playing, so choosing the right toys is an important way to foster their growth and development. Even infants who aren’t yet mobile can be introduced to toys that stimulate their senses of sight and sound and, eventually, touch. Look for musical mobiles to hang above the crib and changing table, and consider getting an infant swing with an overhead toy bar featuring hanging toys that your baby can look at and touch. As your baby grows older, they’ll also enjoy rattles and teethers, play stations and baby gyms.
